About the Asian Youth Theatre Festival

“Enlightening, empowering & challenging young people through theatre”

The Asian Youth Theatre Festival was first conceived in 2016 and aims to provide a bridge between cultures to connect and unite youths in theatre and serve as a tool for building the next generation of Asian artists. It hopes to create an inclusive community that utilizes theatre as a vehicle for change. The AYTF is based in Singapore and is supported by the Singapore National Youth Council.

At the AYTF, each organization presents a performance followed by a dialogue, hosted by youth emcees from different stakeholder groups, engaging audiences in discourse and allowing access to each group’s artistic process, interpretation of the theme and cultural practice. Each organization also shares a workshop demonstrating their cultural or artistic practice. One representative from each organization is nominated to be part of a multicultural and multilingual original devised performance, presented as part of the festival’s closing ceremony.

Theatresauce at the AYTF 2024

Theatresauce is responding to this year’s theme of CHANGING CLIMATES by presenting an interactive street performance which explores infrastructural and environmental issues within the Malaysian context. This piece is instigated by recent sinkhole incidents in Kuala Lumpur, which calls for urgent scrutiny on safety, urban development, sustainability, and public policy.

Theatresauce will also run a workshop on impact creation in addressing the issues above using theatre games and role-playing exercises. One collaborator from the Theatresauce team will also be part of a multi-national devised performance which will be presented at the Festival’s closing ceremony.
