Start the new year with Theatresauce by expanding your theatremaking toolbox!
Whether you’re an emerging theatremaker or you’ve been involved in the creation of theatre for some time, these bite-sized workshops provide additional viewpoints and practical considerations in approaching your work. Each standalone session focuses on a modality specific to live performance with opportunities to contextualize, experiment, create, and reflect on your process. There are seven sessions total taking place on weekends throughout February and early March 2025. These sessions are led by former Artistic Director Kelvin Wong, who’s currently pursuing his practice-based doctorate.
Join us for one, three, five, or all – the more sessions you sign up, the more you save. Participants who attend three or more sessions are invited to join an all-day theatremaking jam on Sunday, March 2 at no charge. This jam will culminate in a mini showcase in the evening that is open to the public. Making a Scene is supported by the Department of Film and Performing Arts at Sunway University.

FAQs
The Sessions

1. What are the sessions about? What is being covered?
The table below is a rough guide on what the sessions intend to cover. Depending on the backgrounds of the participants, the subtopics may be tweaked for a more bespoke workshop experience. The sessions focus on contextual application and practice, while utilizing language that is simple and accessible.
2. Who are these sessions for?
These sessions are designed for theatremakers at late-beginner and intermediate levels who are interested in making work collaboratively and interdisciplinarily. At present, you might be a director, writer, performer, designer, dramaturg, or a combination of these. During the sessions, you take on a variety of roles in different ensemble permutations.
3. Do I need prior experience to sign up? Do school or university productions count?
It would be ideal to have some experience in performance creation prior to the sessions, as it would give you contexts from which you’re able to draw and reflect. School, college, and university projects and/or productions count. If you are entirely new and have never been involved, it is likely that you will find these sessions tricky to follow and navigate.
4. May I just observe?
You are expected to actively participate to be on the same page with everyone else. We unfortunately cannot accommodate observers in any of the sessions.
5. How is each session run?
Each session opens with an introduction to the modality that is explored. The plan is to clarify some terms, look at several viewpoints through examples in practice by past performance makers, and position the modality within a few performance contexts in the present. After an hour’s lunch break, we explore a structured vocabulary in smaller groups through a few hands-on activities. This is followed by an application of this vocabulary in a performance creation setting. The session ends with a reflective discussion on discoveries and challenges, as well as situating the modality within your own creative processes. You are also given a reference list by the end of each session for further reading.
6. How in-depth will we go with each session/modality?
These light-touch sessions are meant to heighten one’s awareness of a selection of theatrical modalities using a moderately critical eye. It is impossible to thoroughly cover a modality in a single session. It is hoped that you continue exploring these modalities, according to your interests, through trial and error in your own practice.
7. Do I need to prepare anything prior, or bring anything to the session(s)?
No preparation is required. You will receive a list of things to bring to the session via email if this applies. Please wear movement clothing and bring a notebook/laptop/tablet. If you prefer to not head out to eat during lunch, please bring your own food.
8. How many participants can each session accommodate? Is there an age limit?
Each session accommodates 8 participants up to a maximum of 14. You need to be at least 18 (in 2025) to participate. There is no age limit.
9. How is the jam session like on Sunday, March 2?
The optional all-day jam (10 am – 9.30 pm) brings together participants who have attended 3 or more sessions in a convergence of modalities that were explored. The session begins with a discussion on context and audience. This is followed by a division of groups, after which the creation process begins. Participants have about 4 hours to put together a short piece before a simple tech and dress runthrough. After breaking fast, the day ends with a mini showcase and Q&A at 8.30 pm that is open to the public.
10. What language(s) are the sessions conducted in?
The sessions are conducted in English.
Location & Attendance
